Does Dogs Deserves to Eat Bones

Dogs reaction looking at a bone treats
Last week, I bought a raw bone in the market to reward my dog as to show how I misses  my fur buddy since I was away for a week. I told my wife what I did but  she told that I shouldn't have given our dog raw bone because it could harm him. I told her that raw bones are dogs' favorite treats ever since and it is even being showed on some TV shows and movies that this treats for the dog would not harm our dogs. As to prove this thought to my wife, I did search  the internet and to my surprise, most of the articles that I have read says bones and even raw bones are dangerous to dogs. Just to have an  idea, I will enumerate the pros and cons of bones so you could weigh if giving them as treats is really beneficial for our buddies:

Pros
  • Bones contains calcium and phosphorus that is really good for dogs diet.
  • Bones provides good oral hygiene as this helps removes tartar which causes gum disease.
  • It helps our dog relieves boredom and helps our dog brains stimulate.
  • It helps digestive functions which offers cleansing and scouring effect on the system.
  • Makes dog poop regularly.
Cons
  • Can make your dog with gastrointestinal obstruction ( blockage on digestive tract)
  • Could cause choking
  • Cuts a wound in the mouth or on tonsils
  • Could cause vomiting
  • Bleeding from the rectum which caused by bone splinters
  • Could cause death due to damages caused by bone splinters.

There are still a lot  more to list down but I think these are the most significant list on pros and cons about giving a bone to a dog. For now I am still confused whether to give my dog a bone again or not. Though the benefits for my dog would still be good for my fur buddy but I can't risk his health over it. Maybe I would just buy a carrot or vegetables for him to chew on just to be safe. How about you? Would you risk your dogs' health to give the treats that dog really loves? Let me know your thought.

How my Dog Survived Parvovirus

By: Hercules P.
We consider our dogs as man's best friend and parvovirus is one
who can make it end.

I have a 9 months old labrador dog and he is in good shape now with full of charms and energy. But last year, he got hit by parvovirus and we were so worried with him since we have heard a lot of fatality stories about this kind of viral infection. We really don't have an idea where he got it but we have 5 other dogs in the house and all of them are very much healthy and no one has shown an indication of having such a viral infection. Since we are too active in the social media community about dogs and dog care, we are aware of what could this killer virus can really harm our fur buddy. On the first day of the infection, we observed him that his poop wasn't formed and watery. We know that he was not feeling well but we don't have a clue that it was already a parvovirus. Then, our dog had lost appetite which was really not normal for us since he do eat volume food since every time, the food that we serve to him is not enough. That time, we are in denial that our dog was hit by parvovirus. Instead we gave him a medication that would restore his appetite that we would usually give  to our other dogs. But he is not touching it due to lost of appetite. Then, when he pooped again, it was really watery and there was a presence of blood. At this moment,  we consulted someone from the social media community for dog lovers and they confirmed  that it was really a parvovirus infection. We were so worried that time but we don't know what to do then. We tried to force feed him and even force him to drink water since we were informed that dehydration is the reason of the fatality in parvovirus, we focused on giving him liquids and we also purchased a dextrose powder for him. But still, we were unsuccessful to have him take it since he was resisting. On the second day, pooping with blood still continues and our dog was really weak. I was at work that time and my wife keeps on updating me on his condition. That day, we decided to send our dog to a vet clinic and my wife and my son accompanied him. The vet informed us that it was a good thing that they sent our dog to the clinic since he was  really weak already. He was given an antibiotic shots and was put with a dextrose to supplement for the lost liquids in him. He was also provided an extra shots of antibiotics that we would give him on a given time through the catheter that was on him. With that I attended on him in two nights just to make sure that the catheter would not be pulled out. After 2 sleepless nights, our dog showed already an interest to eat and get well. It was a worrying experience and we almost lost our dog with parvovirus. We are very thankful that we were able to save him and good thing that my wife had decided to send him to the vet right away. The vet told us that if we did not send him that time, we may not save him.
I heard that a friend's dog died of  parvovirus just this week, and I was saddened on what had happened to her dog. I am sharing you this story because  our dog experienced the struggle and survived this killer virus. And with the right decision, you will save your furbuddies and be with them longer.

Signs & Symptoms of Parvovirus in Dogs

By: Cathy Garcia of Furbabies TLC
Dog suffering from parvovirus
Dogs with parvovirus may vomit and may have a diarrhea with abdominal pain. Often, diarrhea has an unusual offensive odor caused by blood in the stool. With parvo, intestinal bleeding occurs in the small intestine so that the blood is partially digested and passes out as black, tarry feces (melena).
Dogs with parvovirus become thin and weak. They are dehydrated and the skin stays “tented” when pinched rather than falling back into place. Tenting is a classic sign of dehydration. The gums in the mouth are tacky rather than moist, and the eyes may appear sunken.
Bacteria growing in the blood is called septicemia. Septicemia is caused when a bacteria in the intestines travel through the intestinal wall and move directly into the blood. Some dogs become dehydrated and septicemic so rapidly they die before diarrhea occurs. This is because dogs with septicemia have high fever and may go into shock.
Some dogs with parvovirus will have only mild infections and few signs of infection. It’s possible  to have some puppies in a litter with mild infections and other puppies may have a severe infection. Listed below are the symptoms of parvovirus once our dog got infected.

Dog Care in Hot Summer!

By: Hercules P.

Summer vacation is really fun! Having a get together with the family in the beach, private pools and even going out of town and out of the country to beat the heat of summer. While we are very excited about getting to have a summer bods and working out to the gym, preparing tickets for our travels and lots of other preparations for this season, we need to take attention also to our pets this summer. Summer can be dangerous  for our furry friends since they could get dehydrated. I have collected some tips on how they could  beat the heat this summer.

  • Make sure to give your dog fresh water once in a while. Keeping them hydrated would be the basic thing to do to beat the heat. A lot of cases that their dog died in heat stroke due to dehydration. Make sure to monitor them that they are drinking water and proactively give them water once in a while. Our dog doesn't talk and they can't tell you if they are thirsty or not.
  • Make sure that your dogs do have a spot that is cool enough for them to rest. Though some dogs stays inside their owners' house, there are still some dogs do stays outside. Set up a spot where they could feel cooler and make sure that the sun light presence aren't too much.
  • Bathe your dog depends on their condition. Do not bathe your dog everyday if they are not comfortable with it. Dogs can be stressed with this and could be a reason that they may get sick. check first your dogs condition if they are okay and looking healthy. Though some dogs prefers to  take a bath once a month, some requires weekly bathing. But the best judgement would be coming from you. You know your dog and you know how do they react with water.
  • Watch out for Flea and Ticks. Summer is the season of flea and ticks. Always check if your dogs do have it and make sure to use grooming solution for this pest. It would also be helpful to clean your surroundings to eliminate the presence of flea and ticks.
  • Never leave your dog in the car. Temperature in the car rises quickly and could really make you dog unease if you leave them in the car. This would give them a high risk of dehydration and could make your dog life in danger.

There are a lot of summer tips for our dogs that surely be useful this summer. You do have one in mind? Share your thoughts. Send a comment so we could help out other dog lovers to beat the summer of 2017 for their lovely dogs!
